The pitaya belongs to the Cactaceae family and the genus Hylocereus. Its fruit is known as dragon or devil fruit. The fruit is 6-12 cm long and 4-9 cm wide, ranging in color from deep pink to red, with large greenish bracts. The flesh is soft in texture dotted with many small edible black seeds, sweet and juicy with a delicate taste: a mix between pear and kiwi. It lives in all areas where citrus fruits are grown, it prefers a soil rich in peat and well drained, which does not allow water stagnation. The consumption of this fruit is indicated to improve intestinal function and counteract free radicals, reduces the absorption of fats and helps regulate blood sugar levels.
