Known as "perennial spinach" or "summer spinach", Tetragonia has nothing to do with spinach proper, in fact it belongs to the Aizoaceae family, although it resembles it in flavor and appearance, with its smooth and fleshy leaves.
In mild climates it grows continuously and reproduces by emitting new shoots from the roots, which is why it is also called "climbing spinach".
It is curious to know that it is the only vegetable that has the southern area as its center of origin, no other vegetable we consume was born in New Zealand.
